spawn is capullo all the way
Seeing as how this is the only place(that I can post at =P) with a healthy number of Spawn fanboys, I'd post this here.
There's the newest Spawn artist Aleksi, who has managed to make Spawn more visually amazing that Capullo(IMO) and added some new things to Al that I love. The main things being the skull/hamhead combo(even though Wood did touch on that too) and the cape not having a collar, but having a hood sort of.
Examples:
Then there's of course, Capullo who defined the dark brooding Spawn we have come to love.
Ex:
Ashley Wood, who has managed to make the most unique and darkest incarnation Spawn has seen, even to this day, and of course, he introduced us to RAVEN!!!
Ex:
And then there's another one of my favorites, Dwayne Turner. He brought to us somewhat of the old school Spawn, meaning he brought back the shredded tattered cape, and had Spawn shrouded most of the time, and the exaggerated skulls on the cape and crotch.
Ex:
In consideration of all this, IMO, Wood's is the definitive Spawn artist. Mainly because he is the one who made Spawn the "Urban Boogeyman" he was always supposed to be. Always cloaked in shadows, had a dark eerie feel to the art, and pretty much executed, IMO, what Spawn was always meant to be. A dark, moody book that took no prisoners.

Todd and Greg are the best at drawing spawn. Of the later guys, I'd have to go with the guy who did the first issues of spawn the dark ages (liam Sharpe? maybe). I think angel Medina's stuff is rank.
when i first read the title of the thread, i was like... "who the fuck is Iyo?"
I love Ashley Wood's art and Capullo's art for different reasons...
Capullo took the original design that Todd made and expanded it to the ultimate Comic book version of spawn. As we saw in the movie though, that vision of spawn doesn't necessarily translate to the real world the same way.
I agree that Ashley's Spawn is the closest to what I picture as a real-life Spawn. Granted the art was abstract enough that some people couldn't grasp it... but I thought it captured the dark, erie FEEL of what the Hellspawn is.
I also think the French comic did a great job of combining those two versions and finding a common ground.
I guess Capullo since his is sort of the definitive Spawn. But as to style, I'd have to go with Ashley Wood.
In my opinion nobody can catch Spawn's eerie feeling better than Ashley Wood, but this new french artist, Aleksi Briclot, is doing pretty good and soon he'll be able to please everyone by mixing all the styles in one.
I, not being a comic book guy, am inclined to base my opinions mostly on the toys and the art I've seen online. Since the movie is what got me started on this character in the first place, I have to say that any "guns-a-blazin'" rendition of the character is generally my favorite-ish. Therefore, Capullo's work based on Todd's imaginings is definative to me. Medina puts something of a surrealistic edge on that concept that also appeals to me. On the other hand, I truly appreciate Wood's effort to hide the character in soul consuming shadow, which perfectly represents what a spawn of hell would much more likely be. I like the way baimun puts it. I guess Turner seems to do the same thing in a much more comic-booky way.
